When I initially began studying the history of music, I didn’t know what I was getting into. Truthfully, I only followed my history of classical music course because I required the credits. I’m absolutely sure a small number of you out there can relate to that. I didn’t know how completely engaging music history may be. You see, in our culture many folks don’t actually study to understand music. For most of the world, music is a language but for us it’s a thing that we consumed passively. This class showed me. When many people consider the history of music, it suggests the history of rock music. We make the presumption that the history is plain as the music is plain.

Actually neither is the case. New chord structures are set up carrying with them new kinds of understanding humanity. New rhythmical patterns are established, carrying with them new techniques of understanding history.

And music shows the entire thing. History of music today is more fascinating. Even if the class was finished, I couldn’t stop studying about the history of music. It had excited my appetite, and I wanted more. I even started to look at sorts of music that hadn’t interested me before in the hope of improving my musical data further. That’s how much I am entranced by the topic.

If you have not taken a course in the history of music, you do not know what you are losing out on. Basically not just the Cds but any kind of media you are or will be using to play your favourite music. The entire thing will appear much more rich, much more luminous, and plenty more significant. A new song can reflect a brand-new way of being, and a recently discovered way of imagining existence globally. This is what studying about the history of music means to many people. Just try it and you’ll see. Listening to music now has a completely new meaning. It make your musical mind truly expand.

Kings of British rock Kasabian stormed Aberdeen last night in the first Scottish date of their national tour.

The Leicester band received a rapturous reception from a packed Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre.

After declaring themselves the heirs to Oasis’s Brit-rock throne after that band’s split in August, the group had a lot to live up to but during a two-hour set last night the crowd certainly seemed to back that claim.

True to their promise to give fans a bit of a show, the atmosphere was set with dramatic lighting and stage graphics. The four-piece of lead singer Tom Meighan, guitarist and vocalist Sergio Pizzorno, bassist Chris Edwards and drummer Ian Matthews stormed through the hits from latest album West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum, including Underdog, Where Did All the Love Go and Fire. The set was peppered with crowd pleasers from debut album Kasabian and 2006’s Empire, with Club Foot, Processed Beats and Shoot the Runner all getting the crowd going.

The group finished on a high with first album favourite LSF, as a rain of confetti showered down on fans.

Serge Pizzorno told Click Liverpool that the recent split of Oasis has left a considerable void in the British rock scene.

Paolo Nutini’s voice could make an atheist believe in God. It is an instrument that has to be a special gift from someone special.

Paolo Nutini may be the best male soul singer from the British Isles since Joe Cocker. He sounds like a melding of Bob Marley and Otis Redding. Unlike Cocker, though, Nutini writes songs … really, really fine songs.

The young Scotsman yes, his name is Italian, but his family has been in Scotland for generations is the son of a fish-and-chips shop owner. His gift for singing was discovered after he won a quiz during a delay in a concert he was attending and was invited onstage to sing. And the rest is … soul, beautiful soul.

Paolo Nutini has been making my driving time better in recent weeks. He sings about love, family, hope and about how much worships his father, the fish-and-chips shop proprietor.

In his fabulous soul song “Coming Up Easy” Paolo sings: “It was in love I was created and in love is how I hope I die.”

I have sworn off reading the Internet postings on my columns. I had done so before, but went back to reading the postings recently.

What a mistake.

Many people say nice things thanks for that but other folks are just nasty.

It’s fine if you don’t like what I write about politics, if you think my columns are a waste of time, if you want to make fun of my looks. Write all you want about those things. Have a go. I don’t care.

Recently, though, one of the snipers, hiding behind a screen name, of course, wrote something shockingly vile, and not just about me. This is the same guy who earlier attacked the bravery of my late father, a World War II combat veteran who came home with a Purple Heart.

Ninety-nine percent of these pathetic potshot artists wouldn’t have the guts to say such things to my face. The anonymous yellowbellies don’t even have the nerve to send in signed letters to the editor.

From now on, though, it is read no such evil. It’s hear the beautiful music instead.

I’ve been writing a lot in recent months about what I’ve given up. I gave up basketball after a second serious knee injury, gave up a diet soda addiction, gave up talk radio, gave up reading the posts on my column.

The only of those that has any lure left is basketball. The other stuff is bad for the body and the soul.

The wonderful music you might see me bob to and sing along with in my car, now that may be the best thing in the world for the body and the soul.
