Some of the Common Myths Concerning BoTox

Sydney Botulinum injections (BoTox for short) is now in vogue in Sydney society in fact it is fast becoming a beauty routine must for many in Sydney. Nevertheless I am always astonished by the ludicrous stories in connection with the painless procedure.

Here I have listed a selection of the more errors which we come across day in day out at Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I work as a doctor.

Fallacy # 1: BoTox might freeze all my expressions!

There are approximately sixty muscles in the human face. They ordinarily work in harmony, however over time lines may form. When surplus BoTox has been injected the muscles that are responsible for expression may become too relaxed. Broadly speaking physicians use relatively low amounts to result in you looking well rested, but still you will keep your natural expression.

Therefore by injecting a carefully measured amount of the BoTox in just the right muscles you can achieve a softening of the fine lines and wrinkles without reducing facial expression.

Fallacy # 2: BoTox is a toxic substance!
This to a small extent is right. Botulinum Toxin Type A is the exact scientific nomenclature. In large amounts it can loosen muscles that you do not want loosened and even can make you really sick.

Chemists have an old phrase that states ‘everything is a poison – all depending on the dose’. A large dose of any medicinal drug can result in illness. If you drink too much water you will die.

Fallacy # 3: BoTox is painful!
The hypodermic needles used at Star Cosmetic Medicine have a diameter less than your hair. Several individuals have equated the treatments to being bit by a bug. Definitely not painful compared to getting a blood test.

Fallacy # 4: My face will be numb!
This is totally untrue. BoTox works principally on the junction between the nerve and the facial muscle, not the nerves of sensation. Only the ability to relax muscles is impacted by BoTox.

Fallacy # 5. You cannot stop getting BoTox otherwise you will get even worse wrinkles than before!
This is also false.

Botox is believed to be effective for up to three months. Further treatments tend to last a little longer. Gradually as muscle strength returns, the lines will reappear bit by bit. However they will certainly not be any deeper than when you began.

In fact the wrinkles should be be softer than if you hadn’t undergone BoTox treatment – even if you never persevere with the treatment. Principally due to the fact that you have given your skin a ‘wrinkle holiday’ for a few months.
